Impressing the local sheriff with his honesty, Pinkerton was promptly appointed as a watchman to monitor counterfeiters.
His exceptional performance led to his eventual promotion as a deputy.
Departing from his rural origins, Pinkerton sought greater opportunities within inner-city Chicago, aspiring to contribute meaningfully to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office.
Despite holding the prestigious position of Deputy Sheriff, Pinkerton continued to pursue detective work on the side, displaying an insatiable appetite for investigative challenges.
Amidst the turbulent era of the mid-19th century Wild West, Pinkerton and his team delved into increasingly high-profile cases, capturing the attention and admiration of then-President Abraham Lincoln.
Impressed by Pinkerton’s capabilities, Lincoln entrusted him with the crucial role of being his personal bodyguard.
Throughout the Civil War, Pinkerton played a significant role in establishing the Secret Service, undertaking tasks that mirrored the responsibilities of modern-day federal agencies like the FBI and CIA.
Recognized as a no-nonsense detective with strong abolitionist beliefs, Pinkerton not only supported fugitive slaves in their quest for freedom but also provided valuable counsel to President Lincoln.

However, Pinkerton’s life came to a tragic end due to an unexpected incident – he succumbed to gangrene after accidentally biting his own tongue.
