The Beatles’ Eye-Opening Encounter with 17-Year-Old George Harrison

Back in 1958, The Beatles, a tight-knit group even in their teenage years, experienced a significant moment with George Harrison during their time in Germany.

During their stint in Hamburg, Germany in the late 1950s, The Beatles secured a residency gig.

The band, comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Stuart Sutcliffe on bass, and Pete Best as their drummer at that time, fully embraced the rock and roll lifestyle while residing in a makeshift concrete room in between their nightly performances.

Describing their living conditions, McCartney later revealed that the room was a bare old storeroom with cold concrete walls, no heating, wallpaper, or paint.

They made do with two sets of bunk beds and minimal covers, enduring freezing temperatures during their stay.

Sharing a single room among themselves, there were no secrets to be kept from one another within the band.

At just 17 years old, George Harrison was the youngest member of the group, facing trouble with local authorities for working overseas at such a young age.

Deported from Germany in November 1960 due to his underage employment status, Harrison eventually returned to resume performing with his bandmates.

Prior to his departure, the same room they all shared became witness to a pivotal moment in Harrison’s life – his first intimate encounter.

Bringing a girl back to their quarters, Harrison’s bandmates discreetly listened as he recounted the experience of losing his virginity under the covers of his bunkbed.

Following the event, his bandmates applauded and cheered, maintaining a sense of camaraderie despite the intimate nature of the situation, showing their support for Harrison’s milestone.

McCartney later reminisced about a similar incident involving Lennon during their time in Hamburg, underscoring the close bond and openness among the band members during that period.

The Beatles’ fortunes soon changed after concluding their residency in 1962 when they crossed paths with Brian Epstein, who would go on to become their manager.

Under Epstein’s guidance, the band was guaranteed a minimum performance fee of £15, signaling a turning point in their career.

Within a year, The Beatles achieved chart success in the UK before embarking on their iconic journey to conquer the American music scene.
