Sally Field Recounts Turbulent Relationship with Burt Reynolds During Oscar Nomination Era

Sally Field recently disclosed details of her tumultuous love affair with the late Burt Reynolds, spanning from the late 1970s to the early 1980s.

The renowned actress, currently promoting her latest memoir “In Pieces,” unveiled that Reynolds displayed a lack of support towards her career endeavors and attempted to dissuade her from accepting roles he deemed beneath her stature.

One pivotal instance was Field’s portrayal in the 1979 film “Norma Rae,” which secured her inaugural Oscar win for Best Actress.

In an exclusive conversation with The New York Times, Field candidly expressed that Reynolds showcased a negative demeanor when she received the prestigious nomination.

“He exhibited hostility towards my nomination,” she recounted.

“He discouraged my attendance at the ceremony and victory.

His jealousy and insecurity were palpable.”

Detailing further, Field highlighted that Reynolds, who passed away in September 2018 at the age of 82, harbored a domineering and hurtful disposition stemming from personal insecurities and past traumas.

She elucidated how he endeavored to shape her into his envisioned ideal woman, a notion she vehemently opposed.

“He aspired for me to embody characteristics foreign to my essence,” she remarked.

“He yearned for a Southern belle akin to Scarlett O’Hara, whereas I am intricate, flawed, and multifaceted.”

Moreover, Field shed light on Reynolds’ struggles with substance abuse, a predicament that significantly influenced his temperament and conduct.

She lamented his reliance on painkillers, noting instances where he consumed them prior to filming, leading to detrimental outcomes.

Recalling a distressing encounter where Reynolds resorted to physical aggression post her queries about his drug utilization, she reflected on his suffering, both physical and emotional.

“His actions were a product of self-medication, often oblivious to his behavior,” she empathized.

The actress emphasized that crafting her memoir served as a cathartic journey towards healing past wounds and attaining self-awareness.

Despite the challenges, Field reminisced fondly about Reynolds, portraying him as charismatic and humorous during moments of sobriety.

While acknowledging her profound affection for him, she acknowledged the toxicity of their relationship, prompting her to acknowledge the necessity of liberation and progression.

“I cherish the lessons learnt from our time together,” she shared.

“Yet, it was imperative to bid adieu and forge ahead on my individual path.”
