In a heartfelt gesture, Prince Harry delighted bereaved military children as they marched past the Cenotaph on Remembrance Sunday.
Partnering with the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the Duke of Sussex surprised the young participants with bags of sweets, bringing smiles and a sense of connection on this solemn occasion.
At 40 years old, Prince Harry has taken an active role as the Global Ambassador for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, an organization founded in 2010 by Army widow Nikki Scott.
The charity aims to provide support to children and young people who have lost a parent in military service.
Nikki’s inspiration came after witnessing the profound effects of her husband Corporal Lee Scott’s death in Afghanistan in 2009 on their two young children.
Nikki Scott shared her appreciation for Harry’s ongoing involvement, noting that he remains in close contact with the charity.
“He sent the children sweets today as well,” she remarked, highlighting the personal touch he adds to his role.
The children, filled with excitement, had sweets in their pockets courtesy of the Duke.
Among those receiving treats was 16-year-old Lexie Pallet, whose father served in the RAF before his tragic passing.
Lexie expressed her pride in participating in the march, stating, “I’m immensely proud to be here today, but I’m also proud of the fact that I’m here to honour my dad and the things he did during his service.”
Lexie’s father, Sergeant Oliver Pallett, died by suicide in 2020, prompting her to join Scotty’s just two months later.
Since then, she and her family have found solace through various supports offered by the charity, including respite breaks and emotional guidance.
“Talking about everything else is really nice,” Lexie explained, emphasizing the comforting atmosphere within the group.
“There’s a sense of family – you don’t have to talk about your loved one if you don’t want to, because everyone understands why you’re there.”
This year, around 100 members of Scotty’s Little Soldiers, including 53 children and young people adorned with their parents’ medals, took part in the Royal British Legion’s march.
To foster a sense of unity amid their grief, the children donned yellow and black scarves, symbolizing their bond within the community.
However, Nikki highlighted the challenges faced by the charity this year, revealing that funding issues have prevented them from organizing a winter festival for the children in 2024.
Despite these obstacles, the organization continues its vital mission.
Recently, Prince Harry penned a thoughtful letter to the children involved with Scotty’s Little Soldiers, acknowledging the weight of losing a parent at a young age.
He reflected on the importance of Remembrance Day, expressing that it honors not only the sacrifices made by servicemen and women but also the lasting impact on families left behind.
In his address, Harry recognized that each child carries a unique story shaped by their parent’s bravery.
“I understand, perhaps more than most, the weight of losing a parent at a young age,” he wrote.
He encouraged the children to find strength in love and memories, while also embracing the community that surrounds them.
Harry emphasized the essence of community, stating that it allows individuals to honor their loved ones while forging bonds that help them navigate life’s toughest moments.
His words resonated with themes of resilience and hope, reminding them that happiness is ultimately what their loved ones desire.
Nikki Scott praised Prince Harry’s dedication to the charity, affirming that his connection is genuine and impactful.
“It’s become a bit of a tradition now for The Duke to write to our members at Remembrance,” she noted, pointing out how meaningful it is for the children to know he is thinking of them during such a poignant time.
