Pauletta Washington has thrown her full support behind husband Denzel Washington’s recent recognition in PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive issue.
The couple, who appeared together at the Los Angeles premiere of Gladiator II on November 18, shared their surprise and delight at Denzel’s inclusion among a host of timelessly attractive celebrities.
When asked about the honor, Denzel, 69, couldn’t help but crack a joke, asking, “Is that like at 5 and 7 as well?
3 months old?” His playful demeanor made it clear that he was both amused and flattered by the acknowledgment.
Pauletta, 74, chimed in with enthusiasm, exclaiming, “I just heard it just now.
I agree!” Her response brought a hearty laugh from Denzel, showcasing the couple’s charming chemistry.
Denzel first earned the title of PEOPLE’s Sexiest Man Alive back in 1996, just over a decade after he and Pauletta tied the knot in June 1983.
Their love story began on the set of Denzel’s debut film, Wilma, released in 1977, although they truly connected later at a mutual friend’s gathering.
Today, the Washingtons are proud parents of four children: actor John David, 40; film producer Katia, 36; and twins Malcolm and Olivia, 33.
The family has recently collaborated on Netflix’s adaptation of August Wilson’s play, The Piano Lesson.
In this project, John David stars alongside longtime friend Samuel L. Jackson, while Malcolm makes his directorial debut.
Katia and Denzel also serve as producers, highlighting their strong family bonds.
Pauletta addressed whether the production of The Piano Lesson was an intentional way to bring the family together more frequently.
She responded, “No, it hasn’t been a ploy, but I’m very happy about it,” reflecting on the joys of working alongside loved ones in creative ventures.
This year marked a significant milestone for the Washingtons as they celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary.
While attending the Toronto International Film Festival in September to support The Piano Lesson, Pauletta shared insights into their enduring relationship.
She emphasized that there’s no secret formula to their successful marriage.
“We work at it.
It’s work.
It’s not that you sit there and you go like, ‘Oh, you know…’” she explained.
“There are a lot of prayers for strength and staying in a forgiving mindset, on both sides—mine and his.
But at the core, it’s our fundamental love for each other that keeps us going.”
Denzel’s recognition as one of the sexiest men in his sixties adds him to an impressive list of fellow celebrities featured in this year’s issue.
Others include Graham Norton, Esai Morales, Tom Ford, Stanley Tucci, Flavor Flav, Vince Gill, Andy Garcia, Kevin Bacon, and Jon Taffer, showing that charm knows no age.
