Nicole Kidman, the renowned actress, has kept silent about her marriage of 11 years to Tom Cruise for a considerable period.
Even after nearly two decades since their separation, the reasons behind their split remain undisclosed.
However, in a recent interview, Kidman shared a new perspective on their relationship that she had not previously addressed – how being wedded to a prominent figure shielded her from encountering the prevalent s**ual misconduct issues that have been increasingly exposed by women in the entertainment industry.
In an exclusive conversation published on Monday by New York Magazine’s the Cut, the 51-year-old star expressed, “I tied the knot at a very young age, but it wasn’t about power for me; it served as a form of protection.” Kidman further elaborated that although she married out of affection, having a highly influential spouse shielded her from instances of s**ual harassment.
Reflecting on her past, Kidman described herself as feeling “very much cocooned” throughout her marriage.
She mentioned, “Upon exiting the marriage at 32, 33, it felt like a transition into adulthood.”
Acknowledging that she has encountered instances of s**ual harassment, Kidman opted not to delve into specifics.
She stated, “I have definitely faced #MeToo situations since childhood!
But do I desire to reveal them publicly?
No.
However, they do surface through my artistic endeavors.”
The esteemed actress, who won an Academy Award, emphasized, “I am candid and vulnerable.
I want my reservoir of experiences and emotions to be utilized—not solely limited to instances of s**ual harassment but encompassing grief, demise, and the spectrum of life.
Nonetheless, it must be done by trustworthy individuals to prevent exploitation.”
Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise, who share two children, first crossed paths on the set of the film “Days of Thunder” in the 1990s and exchanged vows later that year when she was 22 and he was 28.
Their marriage concluded in 2001 due to irreconcilable differences.
Subsequently, in 2003, Kidman clinched the Academy Award for best actress for her role in “The Hours.”
She subsequently tied the knot with country singer Keith Urban in 2006.
Regarding her marriage to Cruise, Kidman typically refrains from discussing it due to her current marital status with her true love, Keith Urban, deeming it almost disrespectful.
Kidman’s insights were featured in the Cut as part of a special edition focused on women and power.
The exclusive interview, presented in a first-person essay style, was crafted from journalist Holly Millea’s dialogue with the actress.
It is anticipated that Kidman will channel her encounters with s**ual harassment into an upcoming project centered on Roger Ailes, the ex-chairman of Fox News who resigned amidst s**ual misconduct allegations in 2016.
In this production, she will portray anchor Gretchen Carlson, who instigated the legal action against Ailes leading to his downfall.
This venture is not the first time Kidman has delved into weighty themes of gender-based abuse.
In the HBO miniseries “Big Little Lies” from 2017, she embodied Celeste Wright, a wealthy character entangled in domestic violence.
The emotionally demanding role left her physically marked, with bruises evident post-scene shoots.
Recalling the intense filming experience, Kidman shared during a roundtable discussion with the Hollywood Reporter in June 2017, “I lay on the floor in the final episode, clad in just my undergarments, having been physically handled roughly.
I remained on the floor, unable to rise.
I was too shattered to get up and felt utterly degraded and infuriated internally
