Morgan Freeman made a fashion statement at the 2023 Oscars by wearing a glove on his left hand, a choice stemming from an incident that occurred nearly fifteen years ago.
The 85-year-old actor donned a black satin glove while appearing with Margot Robbie to commemorate Warner Bros.’ 100th anniversary during the 95th annual Academy Awards ceremony.
Following his appearance, concerned viewers took to Twitter to express worry for Freeman’s well-being.
However, loyal fans were quick to clarify that the glove is not an unusual accessory for the renowned star of “Shawshank Redemption.”
This glove is not a mere fashion statement for Freeman; it serves a practical purpose due to the residual effects of a severe car accident he experienced in August 2008 on a Mississippi highway.
Despite initial assurances from medical professionals that his hand would recover, Freeman was left with lasting nerve damage, rendering his hand immobile and unable to even perform basic finger movements.
Reflecting on his condition in a 2010 interview with People, Freeman disclosed, “I suffered nerve damage, and it hasn’t gotten better.
I can’t move it.”
He highlighted the importance of hand movement, stating, “If you don’t move your hand, it will swell up.
Do you know you move your hand about a million times a day?”
At the time of the accident, which resulted in Freeman’s vehicle overturning multiple times, witnesses noted his remarkable composure.
Despite sustaining injuries to his left shoulder, arm, and elbow, requiring extensive surgery, Freeman remained alert and engaged with rescue workers throughout the ordeal.
The compression glove worn by Freeman exerts gentle pressure on the veins in his hand, promoting blood circulation and alleviating symptoms such as tingling, pain, and swelling.
This functional accessory seamlessly complemented Freeman’s elegant ensemble for the Oscars ceremony, where he looked sharp in a black tuxedo and bow tie.
In contrast, Margot Robbie radiated glamour in a black sequined off-the-shoulder gown at the event.
Although her film “Babylon” received nominations in three categories, it did not secure any wins on the prestigious night.
While Robbie, 32, has garnered critical acclaim for her performances in films like “I, Tonya” and “Bombshell,” she is yet to clinch an Oscar victory.
In contrast, Freeman boasts five Oscar nominations and clinched the Best Supporting Actor award for his role in “Million Dollar Baby” in 2004, solidifying his status as a revered figure in the film industry.
