Halle Berry’s Grueling Journey: Broken Ribs and Limit-Pushing Training

Embarking on a challenging role as an MMA fighter in a new film, Halle Berry faced intense physical demands that led to her breaking two ribs during training.

The 55-year-old actress, known for her Oscar-winning performances, immersed herself in the role of a former fighter making a comeback in an upcoming Netflix movie.

Berry not only starred in the film but also took on the task of directing it, demonstrating her commitment to authenticity by training with UFC champion Valentina Shevchenko.

To embody the character realistically, Berry delved into various martial arts disciplines such as Brazilian jiu-jitsu, judo, Muay Thai, tae kwon do, and kickboxing.

Her rigorous regimen included heavy weight training and pushing her body to its limits.

Despite enduring the pain of two broken ribs sustained during a scene with Shevchenko, Berry remained undeterred, having previously broken three ribs while preparing for her role in John Wick 3, an experience she proudly described as a “badge of honor.”

Reflecting on her journey, Berry shared with Women’s Health magazine that she thrives when faced with challenges and hard work, emphasizing that age should not limit one’s ability to push boundaries.

The demanding physical training for the film served as a reminder that self-definition is within one’s control, leading her to feel healthier and stronger than ever before.

During filming, Berry’s dedication to mastering fight sequences paid off when a real-life referee, accustomed to officiating Valentina’s matches, praised her performance, likening it to witnessing an authentic bout.

This validation validated Berry’s meticulous preparation and collaboration with a professional fighter, underscoring the success of her training efforts.

While Berry’s on-screen endeavors showcase her extraordinary fitness achievements, her off-screen routine is more balanced yet equally disciplined.

Maintaining a six-day-a-week workout schedule that often includes weight training and plyometrics with her trainer Peter Lee Thomas, Berry also prioritizes restorative practices like stretching, Pilates, and yoga to rejuvenate her body as needed.

Juggling motherhood alongside her demanding career, Berry’s motivation for maintaining a rigorous fitness regimen stems from her desire to be present for her children, Nahla and Maceo.

Emphasizing the importance of longevity and wellness, Berry remains committed to her health journey, recognizing the significance of nurturing her well-being as a foundation for caring for her family.

In addition to her dedicated fitness routine, Berry follows a low-carb, protein-rich diet and incorporates intermittent fasting to support her overall health goals.

Regular acupuncture sessions further aid in balancing her hormones during perimenopause, contributing to her holistic approach to well-being.

By prioritizing self-care and personal fulfillment, Berry affirms the value of nurturing oneself as a prerequisite for effectively caring for others and living a fulfilling life.
