This shift was not unexpected, considering that in October 2019, the couple had condemned the British tabloid the Daily Mail for publishing excerpts from a private letter penned by Markle to her father earlier that year.
Prince Harry accused the publication of selectively omitting portions of the letter to manipulate readers, a claim refuted by the Daily Mail in a statement to Insider.
Despite the rarity of royal family members taking legal action against media outlets, both Markle and Prince Harry pursued legal proceedings against British tabloid owners in October 2019, citing infringements such as the misuse of private information.
Additionally, Markle’s status as a divorcée and an American raised eyebrows due to historical perceptions of such attributes as scandalous in royal relationships.
Nevertheless, she received approval from the royal family to marry Prince Harry and is not the first divorcée nor American to join the royal ranks.
