In the latest buzz from the entertainment world, insiders from the filming of Mad Max: Fury Road have revealed details about a major clash that occurred during production.
During the filming of the movie in 2015, lead actors Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy found themselves in a heated argument that some described as a full-blown “war.”
Renowned New York Times columnist Kyle Buchanan sheds light on this incident in his newly released book, Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Untold Story Of Mad Max: Fury Road.
According to Buchanan, tensions between Theron and Hardy, who portrayed Imperator Furiosa and Max, respectively, reached a breaking point when Hardy arrived late to set by two hours, leaving Theron waiting and feeling disrespected.
An excerpt from the book published in Vanity Fair quoted Theron stating, “I don’t want to dwell on the past, but a bad moment led to a confrontation between Tom and me.”
Camera operator Mark Goellnicht, another member of the cast, mentioned that Hardy’s habitual tardiness after call times particularly irked Theron.
He revealed, “Tom had a reputation for being consistently late.
If the call was in the morning, he was nowhere to be seen.”
Goellnicht recalled an incident where Theron remained steadfast in her position inside the War Rig after Hardy’s delayed arrival, refusing to budge as a statement of her displeasure.
When Hardy finally appeared after two hours, Theron unleashed a verbal tirade, expressing her frustration at his lack of punctuality and disrespect towards the crew.
The confrontation escalated as Theron demanded a substantial monetary penalty for each minute the crew had been kept waiting, prompting Hardy to confront her aggressively, causing Theron to feel threatened and request additional security.
In response to the situation, Hardy acknowledged feeling overwhelmed and outmatched, admitting to succumbing to pressure and acknowledging the need for a more capable and seasoned partner.
Reflecting on the incident, Hardy expressed, “Looking back, I realize I was not fully prepared for the challenges.
The intense pressure affected both of us.
Charlize deserved a better, more experienced collaborator.
That authenticity cannot be fabricated.
Perhaps with age and experience, I could rise to that challenge now.”
