Glenn Gordon Caron, the creator of “Moonlighting” and a close friend of Bruce Willis, has shared insights into the actor’s struggle with dementia, indicating a significant decline in his ability to communicate.
Caron disclosed to The Post that since Willis was diagnosed with aphasia and later dementia in March 2022, he has made consistent efforts to visit the 68-year-old star almost every month.
He emphasized maintaining a connection with Willis and his wife, Emma Heming Willis, along with their three older children.
The stark contrast in Willis’ current state from his vibrant personality is particularly striking to Caron.
He described Willis as someone who cherished life to the fullest, exuding immense enthusiasm for each new day.
Despite the challenges posed by his illness, Caron recognizes that deep down, Willis remains the same person, albeit viewing the world as if through a screen door.
During their interactions, Caron observed that Willis initially recognizes him for a brief period but struggles with verbal communication, a stark departure from his past self.
Although Willis has lost his former linguistic abilities, Caron emphasized that the essence of who he is still shines through, underscoring that being in his presence is a source of gratitude despite the diminished zest for life.
Before Willis’ condition deteriorated further, Caron managed to inform him about the streaming of their acclaimed series “Moonlighting” on Hulu.
Despite his inability to express it, Caron noted that Willis found joy in knowing that the show would be accessible to audiences once again.
Having received the diagnosis of frontotemporal dementia at the beginning of 2023, Willis’ family, particularly his wife, continues to provide updates on his health status.
Emma Heming Willis candidly shared the challenges they face, highlighting the toll dementia takes on both the individual and their loved ones.
Acknowledging the complexities of dealing with Willis’ condition, Heming Willis expressed the bittersweet nature of gaining clarity through the official diagnosis, enabling her to navigate the reality of their situation with a sense of understanding and acceptance.
