and Barbara Bush’s House: ‘None of This Looks Good’

**Brooke Shields’ Hilarious Flooding Fiasco at the Bushes’ Home**

In a charming recollection, actress Brooke Shields shared a delightful anecdote involving a near-disastrous incident during a visit with former President George H.W.

Bush and his wife, Barbara Bush.

This entertaining story came to light during a conversation with Lauren Bush Lauren at the New York Celebration of Reading on November 20.

The event was organized by the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

Shields, now 59, took a trip down memory lane to a summer visit to the Bush residence in Kennebunkport, Maine.

After the family had settled in for the evening, she found herself in the kitchen and noticed water seeping in through an open window.

Panic set in as she realized the potential damage that could ensue.

“I started closing all the windows in a frenzy and grabbed towels to mop up the mess,” Shields recounted.

With a beer in hand and concern for the wood floors growing, she humorously thought, “This does not look good.”

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Shields rushed upstairs to inform the Bushes about the flooding.

She approached their bedroom nervously, avoiding eye contact since they were in their nightwear.

“I just wanted to let you know about the open windows and the flooding,” she explained, expressing her anxiety over potential wood warping.

In a moment of self-deprecation, Shields said to herself, “Shut up, Brooke,” as she delivered her unexpected news.

However, to her surprise, Barbara Bush responded warmly, saying, “Oh honey, Brooke saved the house from flooding,” validating Shields’ frantic efforts.

After the scare, Shields joined the Bushes for an unexpected cozy evening.

They settled down together to watch television, enjoying TV dinners while tuning into an episode of *CSI*.

Reflecting on the experience, Shields chuckled, “I think there really is a God.

This is one of the sweetest moments of my entire life.”

Beyond this humorous incident, Shields expressed how significant the Bushes were during her formative years.

With no grandparents and limited family ties, she looked up to both George and Barbara Bush as paternal figures and mentors.

Their presence filled a void in her life, making the experience even more meaningful.

As she prepares to release her upcoming book, *Brooke Shields is Not Allowed to Get Old*, slated for January 2025, Shields reiterated the importance of the Bushes in her life journey.

Their influence resonated deeply, creating lasting memories.

The Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, which Barbara founded in 1989, aims to enhance literacy among families across the nation.

Shields, a strong advocate for education, emphasized the power and freedom that comes with literacy, highlighting her commitment to this cause.

The New York Celebration of Reading also featured insights from authors Jessamine Chan and Kirsten Miller, along with remarks from Miss New York 2024, Abigail Quammen.

A heartfelt pre-recorded message from Jenna Bush Hager enriched the event, marking the kick-off of a year-long celebration honoring Barbara Bush’s legacy.

Jenna expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I’m so excited to be a part of this yearlong celebration of my grandmother’s life and legacy.” She acknowledged how her grandmother’s dedication to literacy transformed countless lives and stressed the importance of continuing this vital work for future generations.

As the centennial celebration unfolds, it promises to honor the profound impact Barbara Bush has left on literacy advocacy, ensuring her legacy endures through continued efforts to empower families across America.
