In a precarious situation off the Kent coast, a ship laden with explosive fertilizer has found itself stranded, denied entry to multiple ports due to safety concerns.

This vessel, linked to Russia, carries a staggering 20,000 tonnes of ammonium nitrate—a quantity that dwarfs the amount responsible for the catastrophic explosion in Beirut back in 2020.

The implications of this cargo are serious, raising alarms among authorities and prompting urgent discussions about its fate.

Jens Wenzel, a defense analyst from Nordic Defence Analysis, weighed in on how the ship was permitted to set sail in the first place.

Initially destined for Palma de Mallorca after departing from Kalashka in the Kola Peninsula, the ship experienced a grounding incident shortly after leaving port.

It then made its way to Tromsø, where it dropped anchor within Norwegian waters, albeit under strict surveillance and with a 500-meter exclusion zone imposed by local authorities.

Eventually, the ship was asked to vacate these waters, leading to an uncertain journey southward.

The ship’s intended next stop was Klaipeda, Lithuania, but officials there refused entry unless the vessel’s dangerous cargo was unloaded.

This refusal has left the ship in limbo, drifting aimlessly as it searches for a harbor willing to accept its hazardous load.

The Danish authorities stipulated that a pilot and tugboat would be necessary for any transit through their waters, further complicating the situation.

With no port willing to take the risk, the ship continues to float, a “femme fatale” of sorts, as it seeks refuge.

When discussing the risks associated with the ammonium nitrate onboard, Wenzel emphasized that while the fertilizer is generally safe under normal conditions, it can become extremely volatile if exposed to fire or other unfortunate circumstances.

In such cases, the potential for an explosion could equate to the force of a 10-kiloton bomb—enough to create a significant disturbance in the ocean.

This stark reality is what has deterred ports from accepting the vessel, as they grapple with the potential consequences of an accident.

The ship’s owner faces a daunting task: finding a suitable port that possesses the necessary facilities to unload the cargo safely.

Until that happens, the vessel remains incapable of undergoing repairs for its damaged rudder and propeller, along with cracks in its ballast tanks.

The malfunctioning bow thruster adds to the urgency of the situation, as the ship has been shadowed by a tugboat throughout its journey, particularly when navigating through Danish waters.

As for the ship’s future, Wenzel speculated that it might eventually find a harbor willing to accept its cargo, possibly in France or Spain.

However, until a port is located, the ship will continue to drift at sea, a floating hazard that poses a significant risk to maritime safety.

The pressing question remains: how long can this dangerous vessel remain adrift before a solution is found?
