Halle Berry’s Journey from Homeless Shelter to Hollywood Star
Hollywood actress Halle Berry recently shared how her experience of living in a homeless shelter during the early stages of her career shaped her into the resilient woman she is today.
The 50-year-old Oscar winner revealed this during an interview on The Jess Cagle Interview with PEOPLE’s editor-in-chief, where she discussed her new film Kidnap, a thrilling story about a mother’s quest to rescue her abducted child.
Reflecting on her past, Berry described the challenging period as “rough” and recalled facing difficult times.
Initially arriving in the city with some money earned from a modeling job, she quickly realized that finances were tight in New York City.
Within three months, she found herself running out of funds and had to turn to her mother for help, only to be turned down, leading to a year of strained communication between them.
Looking back on her mother’s tough stance, Berry now sees it as a pivotal moment that taught her valuable lessons.
She acknowledged her mother’s words, “If you want to be there, then you work it out,” as a crucial push that motivated her to persevere through the challenges she encountered.
Despite the hardships she faced, Berry emphasized that giving up was never an option for her.
Determined to prove her capabilities to both her mother and herself, she channeled her high school mindset of overcoming obstacles and defying expectations.
The period spent in the shelter became a significant part of her journey towards self-reliance, eventually leading her to take on jobs as a waitress and later as a bartender.
Berry’s latest project, the film Kidnap, is currently showing in theaters, showcasing her talent and resilience on the big screen.
Her candid revelations about her past struggles serve as a testament to her strength and determination in the face of adversity, highlighting the transformative power of perseverance and hard work in achieving one’s goals.
