### Sussexes Reflect on Colombia Trip Amid Mixed Reactions

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have reportedly found themselves in an awkward position following their recent tour of Colombia, feeling “embarrassed” by the mixed reception they received.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex embarked on a four-day journey through the vibrant South American nation this month, where they garnered considerable admiration from many.

However, sources close to the couple indicated that they were caught off guard by some of the criticism aimed at them.

According to an insider cited by OK!, the couple is eager to participate in more tours like this, relishing the chance to engage with communities as they did during their royal duties.

Yet, they couldn’t shake off the discomfort stemming from the backlash.

This source elaborated that both Harry and Meghan are passionate about raising awareness for the challenges faced by countries like Colombia, believing their celebrity status can shine a light on critical issues.

Despite recognizing that these trips could enhance their standing in Hollywood and bolster their brand, they remain uncertain about how to navigate the path forward after this latest uproar.

Observers have raised eyebrows, questioning whether Harry and Meghan are trying to establish a new tradition of “royal visits” since stepping back from their official roles four years ago.

This scrutiny intensified with comments from Colombian official Andres Escobar, who criticized the couple’s visit.

He mentioned that Vice President Francia Marquez had a keen interest in inviting them largely because they were featured on Netflix.

Escobar also took issue with the substantial security costs associated with the couple’s presence, claiming it amounted to £1.5 million.

Escobar voiced his concerns, stating, “There are countless Colombians struggling with hunger and basic needs.” He added that the expenditure on the Sussexes was a misallocation of resources, especially during a time when the country is facing economic hardships.

“Eight billion pesos spent on their visit could have been utilized more effectively,” he argued.

On a contrasting note, the Colombian Ministry of Equality and Equity, under Vice President Marquez, praised the Sussexes’ visit as a triumph.

Reports from El Pais confirmed that the couple financed their travel and that of their team entirely out of their own pockets.

A spokesperson for the Ministry stated, “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex covered their expenses.”

While personal engagements were reportedly supported through co-financing, it appears international agencies contributed to some of the costs incurred during the visit.

The Ministry emphasized that this trip served as a platform for Colombians to connect with the Archewell Foundation, the charitable organization established by Harry and Meghan.

Furthermore, the spokesperson highlighted that the visit aimed to elevate Colombia’s profile for potential business opportunities and tourism, marking it as a significant occasion for the country.

They noted, “It was a very fruitful visit that facilitated connections between the local population and the Archewell Foundation, which supports various programs focused on women’s economic autonomy and combating digital violence against youth.”

As reported by El Pais, although the Colombian government did not cover most of the trip’s expenses, there are indications that certain aspects may have benefited from state support, including possible backing for travel costs and meals provided as part of an official arrangement.

Despite the pushback, the source close to the Sussexes remarked that they are accustomed to facing criticism and will continue to support each other through challenging times.

Yet, a royal insider shared that Harry is grappling with a sense of isolation as he nears his 40th birthday.

They noted, “As he approaches this milestone, Harry has understandably reflected on his past, feeling troubled by the distance from family and childhood friends.”

The insider concluded, “While he wouldn’t trade his life with Meghan and the kids for anything, he does feel lonely at times.

He always envisioned celebrating his 40th surrounded by loved ones, and it saddens him to acknowledge that nothing will change before then.”
